A captain forever: 33 years without Dražen Petrović
On this day, Croatian basketball remembers the man who changed its history forever

Thirty-three years have passed since Dražen Petrović, one of the greatest athletes Croatia has ever produced, tragically lost his life in a car accident near Ingolstadt, Germany.
On this anniversary, representatives of Cibona laid flowers and lit candles at his final resting place at Mirogoj Cemetery in Zagreb, paying tribute to one of the greatest basketball players in the history of Croatian and European sport.
Although his life was cut short at the age of 28, Dražen’s legacy remains permanently woven into Croatian, European, and world sport. He was a symbol of excellence, dedication, and an unwavering desire to succeed—a basketball virtuoso rightly nicknamed the Mozart of Basketball.
His journey to the top began in his hometown of Šibenik, where he displayed a rare talent from an early age. Wearing the Cibona jersey, he conquered Europe, leading the Zagreb club to European championship glory while simultaneously collecting medals with the national team at the world's biggest competitions.
Following a successful spell with Real Madrid, he fulfilled the dream of many European players by making the move to the NBA. His true breakthrough came with the New Jersey Nets, where he established himself as one of the finest European players of his generation and paved the way for countless others who followed in his footsteps. His shooting ability, competitive spirit, and work ethic continue to be cited as examples of professionalism and dedication to the game.
The impact he left is reflected in the fact that the New Jersey Nets retired his No. 3 jersey only months after his passing, an honor reserved for the very greatest. In 2002, he was posthumously inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, joining the immortals of world basketball.
Today, his name lives on through the Dražen Petrović Memorial Center in Zagreb, through the Croatian Olympic Committee award that bears his name, and through generations of young athletes who find inspiration in his story. More importantly, it lives on through the values he embodied—hard work, responsibility, courage, and the belief that limits can be pushed every single day.
Time passes and the years go by, but the memory of the Captain never fades. Dražen Petrović remains an eternal inspiration to Croatian basketball and one of the brightest symbols of Croatian sport.
A captain forever.
