On this day, May 25, 1995, in Baltimore, he lost the most important battle of his life against a cruel illness — lymphoma cancer — at the age of 47.

On this occasion, representatives of the Croatian Basketball Federation laid flowers and lit candles at his final resting place at Mirogoj Cemetery, paying tribute to one of the greatest basketball players in the history of Croatian and European sport.

Although born in Zagreb, Krešo was, in heart and soul, a man of Zadar. It was Zadar that became his basketball stage, a city that adored him and still proudly carries his name through the arena where the No. 11 jersey hangs forever beneath the rafters as a symbol of an unforgettable era.

Krešo was not only a top-class athlete. He was a basketball visionary, a player far ahead of his time — a center capable of playing every position, whose elegance, intelligence, and technique changed the way basketball was played. For seven consecutive years, he was selected to the All-Europe First Team, while his collection of trophies and medals remains among the greatest in sports history — Olympic gold in Moscow in 1980, two World Championship gold medals, and three European Championship titles are only part of the legacy he left behind.

America, the birthplace of basketball, paid special tribute to him when he was posthumously inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996 as only the third non-American in history to receive that honor. It was yet another confirmation that Krešimir Ćosić was not just a great player, but an immortal basketball legend.

Today, 31 years after his passing, his name continues to live on through memories, stories, sport, and the emotions of all those who loved and respected him. Legends like Krešo never truly leave — they remain part of the identity of a nation and its sport. Krešo’s sport.
