They paid their respects together with his wife, Aja Novosel, as well as club friends Sven Ušić and Velimir Vuga.

Mirko Novosel was not only an outstanding basketball coach, but also one of the key figures behind the creation of Cibona as we know it today. His connection with the club dates back to his playing days with Lokomotiva, while as a coach, sports executive and long-serving honorary president, he left an indelible mark on its development and greatest achievements.

Under his leadership and through his decisive contribution, Cibona grew into one of Europe’s most successful basketball clubs. The era marked by European Cup titles in 1985 and 1986, two Cup Winners’ Cup trophies and numerous domestic titles is permanently etched into the history of Croatian basketball. His vision, expertise and ability to build winning teams laid the foundations for the most successful period in our club’s history.

His greatness was also recognized on the international stage. In 2007, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, followed by his induction into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2010, confirming his place among the most influential coaches in the history of world basketball.

Novosel passed away on July 20, 2023, but his legacy continues to live on in Cibona’s identity, its trophies and the values that the club strives to pass on to new generations.

We proudly and gratefully preserve the memory of Mirko Novosel. His name will forever remain inseparably connected with Cibona.
